Lewisport Fire Department Focuses on Safety, Service and Community

By Jennifer Wimmer
Lewisport Volunteer Fire Department continues to play a vital role in protecting residents, responding to emergencies and supporting community events. The crew works year-round to help keep everyone safe.
Lewisport Fire Chief is Troy Roberts, and the Assistant Fire Chief is Joey Galmiche. Roberts joined the department in 2000, and began as Fire Chief in 2016. His wife, Teresa Roberts, is an active member, as well as a chaplain.
Troy has also served as President of the Green River Fire Fighters Association (GRFFA), which provides training locally and has instructors that come to the Lewisport Station to teach. They orchestrate the fire school’s training in the Green River area which spans over 8 counties. LVFD hosted the GRFFA meeting at the station last July, and will again this fall.
Many of the county’s firefighters wear multiple hats, also serving as paramedics and EMTs with local emergency services. They balance those responsibilities while sometimes also working part- or full-time jobs in other fields.
Teresa Roberts and Nicole Dant are both active members, and also provide rehab on the scene, of water, food and blankets for extended firefighting or other accidents. Rehab is necessary to support first responders in the county who, many times, need to be on-scene for hours at a time. They make sure their fellow firefighters and other first responders are hydrated. They also bring fresh fruit, sandwiches and snacks, as well as providing support for the family who is suffering from the losses of a fire.
One of the water rescue boats formerly utilized by the Hancock County Rescue Squad is now at the Lewisport Fire Station. The other boat is at Hawesville Fire Station. The rest of the life-saving rescue squad equipment has been dispersed among all 4 departments in the county, such as the JOL units.
The Lewisport Fire Department crew visits North Hancock Elementary School to provide very valuable fire safety classes that are fun and engaging for the children. They also host a fire safety class at the station in Lewisport for homeschooling families in the community.
The crew is dedicated in teaching fire safety. With donations from the community, they remodeled a mobile trailer unit for taking to the schools and teaching upcoming fire safety classes. It is fully equipped with a kitchen, and even has a phone set up for practicing making emergency calls.
Firefighters currently serving at LVFD are: Chief Roberts, Assistant Chief Joey Galmiche, Jason Mattingly (EMT), Laura Mattingly, Hunter Stanley (Paramedic), Hunter Mattingly, Housten Riney (Lieutenant, EMT), Kaitryn Addington (Paramedic), Mary Bele Hamilton, Frank Carroll, Amy Stanley (Chaplain), Ryan Williamson, Gerald Davis (EMT), Amy Tipton (Search & Rescue/K9), Ray Estes (Chaplain), Teresa Roberts (Chaplain), Jordan Blake (Captain, Paramedic), Brandon Nash (Captain, EMT), Hannah Roberts (EMT), Todd Edgell (EMT), Jerred Sanders, Jorden Walker (EMT), James Macy, Lee Miller, David Dant (Battalion Chief, Paramedic), Nicole Dant and Glenn Lambert (Safety).
