Hancock County VFW Post 5186 will host a guest speaker from Friends of Sinners, a Christ-centered recovery ministry in Owensboro, at its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 9. The presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the second floor of the old courthouse in Hawesville, with the public invited to attend the talk before the post’s regular meeting.
Friends of Sinners is a residential substance recovery program that helps adults rebuild their lives through Biblical teaching, accountability and life-skills training. The ministry emphasizes “restoration and reconciliation” to Christ Jesus, with the goal of helping individuals become positive contributors to society.
According to the organization, Friends of Sinners offers a safe, structured, post-treatment setting where residents can strengthen their spiritual foundation in recovery and build a personal relationship with Christ Jesus. The program teaches men and women to apply Biblical principles in everyday life as part of its explicitly Christian approach to recovery.
Friends of Sinners describes its work as a compassionate ministry of Christ Jesus that shares the message of the Gospel “in both word and deed.” Staff and volunteers are required to be Christians, and the ministry encourages life change and service to others through Christ Jesus.
VFW Post 5186 Quartermaster L.T. Newton said many veterans have turned to Friends of Sinners for help with challenges such as addiction and PTSD, and he hopes the presentation will reach someone in need of support. He noted that a high number of veterans die by suicide each year.
National reports show that suicide remains a serious concern both among veterans and in the broader population. Recent federal data indicate that veterans die by suicide at a rate of about 35 deaths per 100,000, while the overall U.S. suicide rate is about 14 deaths per 100,000 people. Those numbers underscore the ongoing need for awareness, support and access to help for anyone who is struggling.
