HCHS Marching Band wins Best Color Guard, Best Percussion and First Place in Class 2A

Hancock County High School Hornet Marching Band competed twice on Saturday, September 30th and won Best Color Guard, Best Percussion and First Place in Class 2A at both competitions! The first was held at Warren East High School during the day, and the second was at Daviess County High School that evening.

Hancock County High School Band Director Zach Buskill said the students did really well and he and the rest of the staff are extremely proud of them. They are in those thick uniforms for over two hours for each performance and the heat at the first competition at Warren East on Saturday was challenging for them, he said, but the excitement of performing helps them push through it. “It’s a long time to be out in the sun and the heat,” Zach said. “It’s a lot, but they always handle it well.”

Many people from Hancock County showed up to support the Hornet Band in their competition Saturday night in Daviess County. “That meant a lot to the kids,” he said. “When the competition is like 2 hours away, we don’t expect a lot of people who aren’t family and friends to go, but having people from the community to go to the Daviess County one and come and say hi to the kids, that was pretty neat. Some people made signs. That was exciting for the kids to see that and experience that [cheering section from the community].

What was nice about Daviess County’s competition is that was really the first time we performed at a competition when it was actually dark, and Daviess County has a really great stadium so it was really cool to see the whole production at night under lights in that environment. I think the kids really enjoyed that. I think it creates a little bit more excitement for the show, compared to when it’s performed in the daytime. It adds a whole other element to it. It was a lot cooler in the evening, so the kids were more comfortable.”

These were their last 2 regular season competitions. The next two are state level competitions. Both will be held at Warren East High – Regionals on October 21st, and on the following Saturday, October 28th are Semi-Finals. How Hancock County performs during the day on the 28th will determine if they will compete that same evening in the Championship Competition at Western Kentucky University.
