Meade pulls out 2-1 win over Lady Hornets

Meade County scored twice in the seventh inning and pulled out a 2-1 comeback victory over Hancock County Lady Hornets during a varsity softball game played at Brandenburg Tuesday.
Baylee Estes led off the game with a base hit and later scored on an RBI hit by Lily Roberts. The game was a pitching duel between Lily Roberts and 8th grader Veronica Roberts for most of the game. The Lady Hornets brought in their 8th grade pitcher, Jordyn Waltrip, in the fifth inning.
Waltrip set down the Lady Waves in order.
Meade County got a 2-out double and a base on balls in the six, but Hancock County got out of trouble without allowing a run. The Lady Hornets had a chance for an insurance run when Layni Roberts led off the sixth inning with a base hit, but the Meade pitched followed with two strike outs and the score remained 1-0 heading to the seventh.
The Lady Waves’ batter led off the final frame with a double and advanced to third on a ground out. The next two batters drew a base on balls before Danica Love delivered a walk-off, 2-run hit to end the game.
Lily Roberts allowed no runs on one hit, with seven Ks and three walks over four innings. Waltrip was charged with the loss. She allowed two runs on three hits, with three walks over 2.1 frames. Veronica Roberts got the win while allowing one run on three hits, with 11 Ks and two walks in seven complete innings.
Estes was 1 for 2 at the plate, Lily Roberts was 1 for 3 with one RBI, and Layni Roberts was 1 for 4.
Apollo
A 5-run fifth inning propelled Apollo High School to a 7-4 win over the Lady Hornet softball team during a varsity game played in Owensboro last Thursday.
The E-gals led 1-0 through four innings until Hancock County’s Jordyn Waltrip belted a 2-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. The 8th graders shot scored Ava Riggs and the Lady Hornets led 2-1.
Apollo’s Mallory Velotta answered with a 2-run homer in the home half of the same inning and the E-gals’ Tyler Hall added another 2-run bomb later in the frame to make the score 6-2.
Apollo plated one more run in the sixth before Hancock County rallied in the seventh. Waltrip got a base hit and Aubree Mosby stroked a double. Both players eventually scored before Apollo recorded the final out.
Lily Roberts allowed five runs on four hits, with six Ks and five walks over 4.2 innings. Waltrip allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit, with one K and two walks in 1.1 innings.
Waltrip was 2 for 3 at the plate with the home run and two RBI. Mosby was 1 for 2 with a double and
one RBI, Ava Riggs and Ella House both went 1 for 3 and Kylie Westerfield was 1 for 4.
