Healthy Habits; pleurisy root, a natural lung decongestant

Pleurisy Root; also known by nicknames such as Canada root, Indian paintbrush and butterfly weed – the pleurisy plant is in the Asclepiadaceae genus, a name derived from the Greek “god” of medicine, Asklepios. Pleurisy root is one of the best herbs for lung health, and is a natural, ancient remedy for relieving the pain and inflammation of pleurisy – a condition in which the sack-like tissue structure that contains the lungs becomes painfully dry and swollen.

This powerful lung decongestant can be purchased in a tincture by itself, or along with other lung-supportive herbs (a compound tincture). It can also be taken in tea or capsule form.

Always do your research, check with your doc, and follow the dosage instructions on the package according to your weight. There are counter-indications, especially for those taking pharmaceutical medications, and most notably heart medicines. It is unsafe for pregnant and lactating women to take this herb.

Here are some of the many possible health benefits of pleurisy root:

  • expectorant (loosens congestion)
  • anti-inflammatory
  • estrogenic (acts like estrogen)
  • antispasmodic (reduces intensity of menstrual cramps)
  • promotes sweating (naturally reduces fever, helps remove fluid buildup & helps eliminate toxins from the body)
  • natural pain reliever
  • reduces lymph swelling
  • helps treat; pneumonia, influenza, bronchitis, chronic cough, asthma, uterine disorders, muscle spasms and digestive challenges

Be Well and God Bless You.
