Hancock County VFW Post 5186 Quartermaster L.T. Newton and member Glen Cox presented a donation to Don Grimes, who recently lost his home and belongings in a fire.
The presentation took place on Tuesday, May 26, at Weber Store, a central meeting point for the three of them.
Grimes, of Cloverport, has faced additional challenges clearing his property after the fire earlier this month, as heavy rains over the last few weeks have slowed cleanup efforts. He continues working to assess the damage and plan next steps for rebuilding.
Newton said Grimes expressed deep gratitude for the VFW’s support. The donation reflects the organization’s commitment to supporting community members when they are struggling.
“It was just us reaching out to people in our area that are going through difficult times,” Newton said.
Newton, a U.S. Air Force veteran and retired master sergeant, also serves as Post 5186 historian, adjutant and service officer, helping local veterans navigate VA assistance.
VFW Post 5186 is led by Commander Homer Newman, a U.S. Army veteran. Meetings are held once a month on the second floor of the old courthouse in Hawesville, and veterans in the county are welcome and encouraged to attend.
