Kentucky State Treasurer Mark H. Metcalf announced last week that the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division has surpassed $100 million returned to Kentuckians, setting a new record for the most returned at this point in any administration in Commonwealth history.
“We’re not talking about numbers on a spreadsheet — we’re talking about real money going back to real people,” Metcalf said. “Crossing $100 million means helping Kentuckians pay bills, support their families and invest back into their communities.”
The achievement reflects an aggressive effort by the Treasurer’s Office to reconnect Kentuckians with lost or forgotten funds — putting money directly back into household budgets.
Unclaimed property includes forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, utility deposits and other financial assets turned over to the state for safekeeping. In recent weeks, the Treasury has processed claims ranging from a few dollars to tens of thousands.
“We made a decision early on: this money doesn’t belong in government accounts — it belongs in the hands of the people,” Metcalf said. “And we’re going to keep pushing until every possible dollar is returned.”
He is encouraging all Kentuckians to check for unclaimed property, noting that significant funds remain available.
“There is still more money out there with someone’s name on it,” Metcalf said. “If you’ve never checked, now is the time.”
