Fire at Domtar Paper Mill Monday; quickly extinguished

Fire fighters work to put out a fire at Domtar Paper Mill in Hawesville Monday night. The large crane was brought in from Tell City as volunteers from Hawesville, Lewisport, Dukes and members of the Tell City Fire Department, along with EMS personnel, worked feverishly to put out the flames. Monday evening, June 19th, Domtar Paper Mill in Hawesville, experienced a fire on the conveyor line which distributes the wood chips. “The call came in at 7:45,” Director of Hancock County Emergency Management Kyle Veach said. “Dukes and Hawesville Fire Departments were initially paged. Officials say luckily Hawesville and Dukes VFD were already at their stations having individual meetings and doing truck checks and responded immediately with four trucks, two per station..

Upon arrival, Tell City Fire Department was immediately contacted for use of their ladder truck. Lewisport Fire Department was also requested, and responded with a truck, as well as Hancock County EMS, with 2 ambulances. www.14news.com/2023/

A spokesperson from Domtar said, “The fire was quickly extinguished and there was no injury. We appreciate the prompt response from the mill and the community emergency response agency. They did a great job, as always. We greatly appreciate their support.” www.domtar.com/en/who
One firefighter (from Hawesville Fire Department) was transported to the hospital with a medical emergency and was kept overnight for observation. The fire was under control an hour and a half after that.”
