Hancock Schools bus involved in traffic collision
The following collision reports have been released by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department:
- On Monday, April 11, around 3:20 p.m., a Hancock County Schools bus was travelling westbound on U.S. 60 when it left the roadway in a narrow portion of the split highway near the Byron Emmick farm and Pleasant View Road.
Sheriff Dale Bozarth said the driver, Kenneth A. Stone of Lewisport, maintained his composure and did not attempt to reenter the paved lanes. The bus continued off-road westbound and collided with a fence.
The bus was loaded with 32 students, and there were no injuries. The investigation into the collision is continuing by the Sheriff’s Department.
- Deputy B.J. Burton investigated a two-vehicle collision Friday, April 8, on U.S. 60. According to the report, around 7:30 p.m., Tom Turner of Lewisport, was operating a 2014 Ford F250 was attempting to cross the highway from John Pate Road to continue eastbound.
Angelia E. McCarty, of Owensboro, was operating a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander eastbound on U.S. 60. Turner failed to notice the McCarty vehicle, entering the lane of travel ahead of McCarty.
McCarty was unable to avoid a collision, striking the Turner vehicle in the driver’s side. Air bags deployed on both vehicles, and both were disabled with very severe damage.
Turner was uninjured, though McCarty was transported to Owensboro Health by Hancock County EMS for treatment.
The vehicles were removed from the scene by Bob’s Garage and Greg’s Body Shop.
- On Wednesday, March 30, Deputy Aaron Emmick investigated a two-vehicle collision involving a U.S. Postal Service Rural Carrier. According to the report, around 10:56 a.m., Celsey B. Schroader, of Hawesville, was stopped at 222 Henderson Grove Road delivering mail.
Schroader’s 2003 Jeep Wrangler was struck in the rear by a southbound 1998 Toyota Avalon operated by Michael L. Taylor of Lewiport.
Emmick reported Schroader’s vehicle spun 360 degrees, coming to rest on the right shoulder of the roadway. Henderson stated he was cresting a hill and failed to see the mail vehicle stopped at the mailboxes.
After striking the Jeep, Henderson’s vehicle veered to the right and overturned, coming to rest on its roof, facing north.
Postmasters from Hawesville and Lewisport arrived on scene and secured the mail material. The vehicles were removed from the scene by Bob’s Garage.
Schroader was transported by private vehicle to Owensboro Health for treatment.
