Panthers pull out win in overtime

The Hornets took one on the chin when they lost in overtime at Daviess County High School Tuesday. The Panthers won 64-58.

“We got off to a slow start. We had some opportunities to really put up some points in the first half, but we just couldn’t make shots,” HCHS coach Mike Orr said. “They (Daviess County) really hurt us on the offensive boards.”

Ryan Ogle, Devyn Powers and Kaleb Keown all hit from 3-point range in the first quarter, but DCHS held a 13-11 advantage after one. The Hornets went inside for scoring in the second frame.

Evan Ferry and Powers scored two baskets each and Landyn Emmick chipped in two points. Ogle landed another “3” and Hancock County trailed by just one point (25-24) at intermission.

Cole Burch got hot for Daviess County in the third and he had help. Burch led the Panthers with seven points in the frame while John McCain hit a “3” and three other players chipped in two points each.

Powers, Ogle and Ferry held their own in the period, but DCHS managed to increase the lead to 42-37.

The Hornet defense did a job on the home team in the fourth, holding the Panthers to seven points in the frame. Meanwhile, the Hornet offense was led by Ferry. The point guard scored eight points over an eight minute stretch and Keown hit a big 3-point basket that helped Hancock County tie the score at 49-49.

The Hornets got another “3” from Keown in the overtime and Powers and Emmick both hit baskets, but the Panthers got the lead then sealed the win at the line. Jonathan Moss hit from long range and Devonte McCampbell scored twice before three DCHS players combined to go 6 of 6 from the charity stripe down the stretch.

“We were able to tie it up, but we expended so much energy during the comeback we just didn’t have a whole lot left for overtime. But we never quit,” Orr said.

DCHS shot 44.4% from the field, while HCHS was 41.2%. The Hornets made 9 of 11 foul shots for 81.8%. DCHS was 9 of 17 from the line.

Powers led the Hornets in scoring with 18 points, including two 3’s, and had two rebounds. Ferry scored 15 points, with four boards, seven assists and two steals. Ogle had two 3’s while scoring 12 points and grabbing five boards. Keown had nine points on three 3’s, with six boards, three steals and three blocks. The 6–4 junior did not attempt a shot inside the arc. Emmick had four points and three rebounds.

Burch led the Panthers with 16 points.
