Demolition at Big Rivers Electric’s Kenneth C. Coleman Station

Demolition at Big Rivers Electric’s Kenneth C. Coleman Station is continuing, with plans to bring down the largest stack at the former coal-fired power plant in the coming weeks.

The three-unit plant was idled in May 2014 after losing its biggest customers – Century smelting operations at Hawesville and Sebree. Century began buying power from the wholesale market after leaving its long-standing agreement with Big Rivers.

The coal-fired units at Coleman Station began operation between 1969 and 1972. Coleman Station was denied a request to remain part of Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) in 2017, sealing its fate.
