Hancock County High Marching Band wins first in class, second overall

The Hancock County High School Marching Hornets managed to pull off an impressive feat at the Madisonville-North Hopkins High School Maroon Classic band festival Saturday. For the first time in over six years, the Marching Hornets won Reserve Grand Champion in the festival, meaning the band took second place overall regardless of class.
“That was a pretty big deal,” HCHS Band Director Zach Buskill said. “The band did really well; they did great!” The band’s show is called ‘Dreams of Flight,’ which is about a young boy that falls asleep and dreams of flying. The first movement is about the excitement the young boy feels as he prepares to take off for his flight. The second movement is about him soaring above the clouds, and the third is the thrill he feels as he flies though a storm. The fourth movement is the boy landing and awaking from his dream. The band performed well in all aspects, Buskill said.
“We won Class 2A in all categories,” Buskill said. “We won best color guard and best percussion, and musically our scores were really high.”
Buskill said the band plans to focus on refining the small things to enhance the visual performance of the band. He said they plan to focus on polishing the band’s marching techniques, and the formations throughout the show.
This upcoming weekend the band competes in the Russellville High School ‘Show of Bands’ festival. Buskill said the contest starts at 6 p.m., with Hancock County taking the field at 6:30 p.m.
