Ella Staples delivered a walk-off base hit and the Lady Hornets won 10-9 over Muhlenberg County at Vastwood Park Tuesday. Hancock County improved its season record to 4-2 with the win.
Lily Roberts tied the score at 1-1 when she led off the second inning with a home run. The Lady Mustangs regained the lead with a run in the top of the third, but the Lady Hornets answered quickly as Kylie Westerfield singled, stole a base and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Roberts.
Muhlenberg again grabbed a 1-run lead in the fourth, but this time the Hancock offense countered with a big inning.
Emmalynn Higdon led off the fourth with a double and she, Haley Wigginton and Baylee Estes all scored to give HCHS a 5-3 lead.
Hayley McFarling had an RBI triple during the inning.
Fortunes turned south for the Lady Hornet defense over the following two frames as the visitors plated six runs to lead 9-5.
Braley Roberts singled and scored on a double by Staples in the sixth, but the girls stranded runners at second and third base.
Trailing 9-6 with three outs remaining, Brooke Toler led off the seventh with a base hit and Higdon drew a base on balls. But things looked bleak when Muhlenberg retired the next two batters.
Braley Roberts worked the pitcher for a walk to load the bases and Westerfield delivered an RBI hit that brought in one run. Higdon came home when Hayley McFarling drew a walk and the score was 9-8 when Staples rapped a hit to right field that brought home the game-tying and game-winning runs.
