The COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage in this country, and around the world, with thousands of new cases being reported each day. On Friday alone, the Green River District Health Department reported 137 new COVID cases in the region, with seven new cases in Hancock County alone. As the cases mount, people increasingly want to know where to go to get tested for the coronavirus.
In Lewisport, both St. Camillus and Family Healthcare Associates offer COVID-19 testing without an appointment. Persons interested in getting a test simply need to call.
“Just pull up outside and call,” St. Camillus receptionist Elizabeth Burrell said. “We will come out and take a swab.”
Burrell said patients need their insurance cards, and when they call a staff member takes a short medical history over the phone. The entire process from phone call to taking a swab takes about 30 minutes. She said results come back in 24 to 48 hours on average.
St. Camillus offers testing Monday through Friday. Monday through Thursday the testing times are 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday testing takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Heather O’Bryan, the medical assistant at Family Healthcare Associates, said patients must provide some form of ID along with their insurance cards when arriving for the test. After the patients call into the office requesting the test, a staff member meets them at their vehicle and gives them a medical questionnaire to fill out prior to conducting the test. A staff member comes out and takes a swab. The entire process takes only a few minutes.
“The process takes about 20 to 25 minutes,” O’Bryan said. “Sometimes it is quicker than that depending on how many we have waiting.”
O’Bryan said regardless of the results, the office calls everyone with their results. She said it typically takes 26 to 48 hours for the results to come back. Testing takes place Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Health Department offers free testing at its Hawesville location by appointment only. The dates for testing are November 25, December 2, December 9, December 16, December 22 and December 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Clarion attempted to contact Hancock Health to see if the practice also offered COVID-19 testing. No one answered at the office number, and a text was not returned.
Health officials say the main weapon in combating the coronavirus is people practicing safe habits. To prevent the spread of the virus, health officials urge residents to practice the three Ws.
“Wear a mask, wash your hands and watch your distance,” Green River District Health Department Public health Director Clay Horton said in a press release. “This is crucial when interacting with anyone outside of your household, including friends, extended family, coworkers and in public settings.”
In Lewisport the numbers to call for scheduling a COVID-19 test are 270.295-3777 for Family Healthcare Associates, and 270.295.3890 for St. Camillus. In Hawesville, the number for the health department is 270.927.8803. By Ralph Dickerson
