Urgent – Kenergy Scam Alert!

The Hancock Clarion just received this important notice from Hancock County resident, Debra Gaynor.

Last night we received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Kenergy. Caller ID said it was from Owensboro Municipal and it was an Owensboro number.

The caller knew my name and I confirmed my identity. I was suspicious, something didn’t ring true. She wanted my address. I told her that if she was from Kenergy she should know my address. She was irritated but quoted the correct address. I confirmed the address was correct. She continued by saying they have an order to shut off our electricity, that we are delinquent on our bill. I told her that wasn’t possible. She argued with me that they were going to shut it off within an hour. Again, I told her we were NOT delinquent on our bill. We pay our bill 1 year in advance and I had just received our Kenergy statement, and it verified we were paid up. She wanted to know when the payment was made. I told her it was either in December or January. She argued with me that it did not show up on their system and they were going to shut us off. I started laughing and said I know this is a scam. She said she would transfer me to her supervisor. I hung up.

They called me back and it was the “supervisor”. He even gave me a case number saying they would have to open a case file. He stated they needed to know exactly how much I paid and when. I answered their questions and I said I would contact Kenergy in the morning. He got very irritated and said we are going to cut off your electricity. He insisted I make a payment right then and they would reimburse tomorrow if I didn’t owe it. I again told them NO I am not delinquent. He said fine then do without your electricity. I hung up.

As soon as I hung up I called Kenergy which was closed but they have an automated system for finding out how much you owe. I was having trouble with the system and finally gave up. My phone rang and caller ID said Kenergy. A very nice gentleman asked why I was calling. I explained to him what had happened. He told me there was no order to shut off my electricity and he verified how much money was left in my account.

If I had not known, I had a credit on my account I might have believed the scammers. I just want to warn the citizens that there is a Kenergy scam. Do Not trust anyone calling you insisting you make a payment immediately. Verify!
