Summer Reading for Teens
Teen Reading Logs
Monday, June 14th through Friday, August 13th
Teen Summer Reading logs are available to pick up at the library or print from our website! Simply mark a circle for every fifteen minutes you read, and return your completed log to the library. You can return up to five logs, and each one earns you an entry in our grand prize drawing at the end of summer! Prizes include hammocks, gift cards, giant candy, tortilla blankets, unicorns, swim passes, and much more!

Teen Advisory Group
Beginning Tuesday, July 6th
Teen Advisory Group is a council of high schoolers that have a hands-on role in making the library a teen-friendly space in our community. Members will earn community service hours while helping to plan the types of events and programs that they are passionate about. And yes: there will be food!

TAG is a great way to meet new friends, be heard, and showcase your interests. It also looks great on college applications and résumés! Meetings will be held at 3:30 pm on the first Tuesday of every month. The June meeting will be at the Hawesville Library.

It’s possible that we will alternate meeting locations as the group becomes active. If you have questions or would like to apply to be part of TAG, please contact Patrick Burk at:[email protected] or call the library at (270) 927-6760.

Dungeon and Dragons Night
Hawesville – July 16, 2021 @ 5:00 pm
Lewisport – July 30, 2021 @ 5:00 pm
Please sign-up by calling either library location 270-927-6760 or 270-295-3765, ask for Patrick.

Summer Reading for Adults: Adult Reading Logs
Our popular reading logs are back for the summer! Keep track of your reading, and turn in your log for a chance to win a prize! Each log is 10 hours of reading, separated into 15-minute increments. All you have to do is fill in each circle as you read. Once you have finished your log, turn it in and it will be entered into the prize drawing.

You may turn in up to 5 logs. Here is a sampling of some of the prizes we will offer: Coleman 50-quart cooler with wheels, a hammock, various outdoor games, swim passes, and more! You will have until August 13th to turn in your reading logs.

Take-and-Make Kits
Look forward to bringing home fun crafts to do at home this summer! At each location on selected dates, Take-and-Make Kits will be available for pickup! There will be no holds on these items. Kits typically go quickly, and we have limited kits available, so please only limit one kit per person.

Porch drop-off is available for those who need it. Please call 270-927-6760 and ask for Emily for more information. Kits will go out on Mondays.
Week of June 28th: Tote bags with fabric markers
Week of July 19th: Cross stitch kits
Week of July 26th: Peanut butter bird feeders

Summer Reading for Kids
Summer Storytime
Storytime in-person is back!  Summer Reading began June 14th and runs through July 28th. Our theme this year is Tails and Tales!  Due to staffing, moving, and other restrictions, we’re offering Storytime a little differently.  We’re offering limited seating and it’s important to register your child. Call the Hawesville Library to register for either Hawesville or Lewisport location.

We have already concluded Storytime at the Hawesville location. We’ll be having Storytime at the Lewisport Branch on July 7th, 14th, and 21st with two time slots and limited seats for each age group. Babies (birth up to 24 months) 9;30 am and 12:00 pm, Toddlers (2–3-year-olds) 10:15 am and 1:00 pm, Pre-K (4–5-year-olds) 11:00 am and 1:45 pm.

Activities provided during Storytime include reading two stories, songs/fingerplays, an activity, a craft, and a snack to go! Ms. Savannah has some fun activities planned! We know that you’ll arrive ready to put on your listening ears, listening eyes, and give your full attention so you don’t miss any of the fun!

Children’s Reading Logs
For our library friends that are 5th grade and under, we’re offering weekly scavenger hunts. If you complete a scavenger hunt, you can turn it in for a finisher prize each week.  Each scavenger hunt turned in counts as an entry for “grand” prizes such as frisbees, t-shirts, bubble wands, swim passes, sidewalk chalk, and MORE!

At HCPL we really strive to serve all ages by providing fun and interesting opportunities!     We hope that you and your family will make plans now to participate in our Summer Reading Program!

Book Review
The Field Guide to Dumb Birds of North America by Matt Kracht
I never thought a field guide to birds would keep me laughing the whole way through, but this book has proven me wrong. This is not your book if you are expecting a comprehensive guide to all North American birds, or if you are uber serious about birding.

But if you might appreciate Kracht’s love/hate relationship with birds and would get a chuckle out of his sardonic obscenities and name-calling, then pick this up and have yourself a comical afternoon! I did actually learn a little bit about the birds he was so lovingly trashing, and thoroughly enjoyed the scribbly hand-drawn pictures. Overall, a fun book for the not-so-serious bird-lover!
