South Hancock Elementary School’s Future Problem Solving team earned first place in Governor’s Cup team competition at a Kentucky Association for Academic Competition regional academic meet on Saturday, Feb. 28.
South Hancock’s Future Problem Solving team has seven members: Oliver Tanner, Kyle Ellan, Audree Earhart, Jacob Ellan, Weston Jessup, Mary Behl and Owen Roberts. Only four students may compete at a time, so Tanner, Ellan, Earhart and Jessup represented the school in the regional competition.

The competition included fourth- and fifth-grade students from 17 counties: Hancock, Breckinridge, Ohio, Daviess, Warren, Simpson, Monroe, Metcalfe, Meade, McLean, Logan, Grayson, Edmonson, Cumberland, Butler, Barren and Allen counties.
Future Problem Solving is a six-step problem-solving program that aims to build 21st century skills in students, including critical and creative thinking, teamwork and collaboration, research skills and written and oral communication. In Governor’s Cup Future Problem Solving, teams spend the year researching big-picture challenges, then use a six-step method to tackle an imaginary situation set a few decades in the future.
This year’s Governor’s Cup topic is video games, and the South Hancock students spent two hours working together on a written exam to analyze and address a future problem built around that theme. The work ends with a written action plan that judges score for creativity, clarity and how well it addresses the problem.
