Hornets win huge meet at HCHS

Hancock County High School hosted their largest track meet in history with seven schools competing on Tuesday, March 26. The Hornet boys team took first place.
“Our boys did well across the board. We would not be undefeated on our new track if we didn’t have solid boys in every event,” HCHS coach Wes Meserve said. “Cooper was the top individual point earner at the meet with 23 points. We had several season and career personal best performances across all events.”
Ben Baker won the 100 meter dash against 40 athletes with a time of 11.30 seconds. Hayden Shearn was tied for sixth in 12.20, Matthew Carroll tied for 8th in 12.30, Julius Girten 20th in 13.00, Camden Toler 22nd in 13.10, Landon Hodges 23rd in 13.20, and Logan Mooneyham 29th in 13.40.
Cooper Jones won the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 11 inches on his final attempt. Christian Yanez was fourth at 18 feet.
“Cooper is a versatile athlete who can do so many things for the team. He’s always willing to do whatever is best for the team,” the coach said.
James Singleton defeated 35 competitors to win the shot put event with a throw of 37–01.5 feet. Lawson Ward was third at 35–03, Drake Haycraft 18th at 26–01, Jameson Boarman 23rd at 24–08.5, Jameson Domerese 24th at 24–03, Jack Ryal 28th at 20–09.5, and Andrew Owens 30th at 19–03.
Their was an incredible finish in the 200 meter dash as four runners crossed the finish line within two tenths of a second of each other.
Kyle Chambers of Butler County won in 23.8 seconds, with Baker second in 23.9. Jones was fourth in 24 seconds flat. Yanez was sixth in 24.6, Hodges was 15th in 27.3, Toler 19th in 27.4, Ethan Heavrin 23rd in 28.8, and Mooneyham 24th in 29 flat.
Jones placed second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 54.5 seconds. Girten was seventh at 1:00.8, Tyrone Hurley 11th in 1:01, and Heavrin 18th in 1:06. Chambers won in 54.1.
Noah Henson was fourth in the 800 meters in 2:25. Max DeJarnette fifth in 2:34, Henry Proctor sixth in 2:40, and Uziel Mungia eighth in 2:44. Parker Smith of Butler County won in 2:06.
Emmitt Meserve placed second behind Smith in the 1600 meters. Meserve finished in 5:16, with Smith winning in 4:56.
“Emmitt was tied for second most with 20 points. He’s starting to develop physically and he’s really focused and goal oriented and knows what he wants to achieve this season.”
Hunter Stephens was fifth in 5:38, Henson sixth in 5:40, Proctor seventh in 5:44, DeJarnette ninth in 5:52, Mungia 10th in six minutes, and Eli Swihart 13th in 6:42.
Meserve won the 3200 meter run in a time of 11:38. Stephens was fourth in 12:23. Wyatt Emmick placed second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.3 seconds. Butler County’s Gage Beasley won in 15.8.
Emmick was distraught after the race and vowed never to lose again to Beasley at the 110 distance.
Beasley won the 300 meter hurdles in 40.6 seconds. Emmick was second in 45.9. The HCHS 4×100 relay team placed third in 47 seconds. Runners were Carroll, Yanez, Emmick and Baker. Breckinridge County won in 46.4.
Hancock was second in the 4×200 relay in 1:36.9, with Breck winning in 1:36.0. Running for HCHS were Carroll, Yanez, Baker and Jones.
Hancock was third in the 4×400 relay in 4:19. Runners were Carroll, Proctor, Emmick and Henson. Breck won in 3:59.
Hancock was third in the 4×800 relay in 9:51. Runners were Henson, Stephens, Meserve and Proctor. Butler County won in 9:13.
Singleton was seventh in the discus with a throw of 94–06 feet. Ward was eighth at 87–06, Boarman 15th at 71–11, Domerese 22nd at 64–05, Ryal 23rd at 61–05, and Owens 28th at 47–09.
Meserve was seventh in the triple jump at 31–05.5. Shane Lucas of Breck County won at 37–03.5.
Ashton Vogt placed eighth in the high jump with a clearance of 4–10. Lane Beasley of Grayson County won at 5–08.
Hancock County won the meet with 156.5 points. Butler County was second at 140, followed by Owensboro Catholic at 111.5, Breckinridge County at 104, Grayson County at 68 and Owensboro High School a 13 points.
“Our boys have now beaten six full teams, including Butler County who had just won the KHSAA Indoor team championship.”
Girls results
Izzy Ross won the triple jump with a distance of 31–02.5 feet. She won by more than two feet over second place.
“Izzy was by far our top performer. She’s a girl that we can put in any race from 200 to 3200 and any jump event and she will usually place very high,” the coach said.
Ross placed second in the 400 meter dash in 1:10.5. Amelia Foran of Breck County won in 1:08.8. Ross was second in the 800 meters in 2:57. Ainsley Sutter of Owensboro Catholic won in 2:44. Addy Harrison took second place in the high jump with a clearance of 4–04 feet. Marie Ann Skaggs won 4–10.
Nahomy Yanez was second in the long jump with a leap of 12–10. Kaylee Jessie of Grayson County won at 15 feet.
Juliana Nevitt was third in the 1600 meter run in 7:21. Emma Haynes of Catholic won in 6:35. Nevitt was fourth in the 3200 in 16:05. Peyton Reid of Catholic won in 12:13.
Yanez placed 12th in the 100 meter dash in 14.8 seconds. Mallary Bailey of OHS won in 13.1. Yanez was eighth in the 200 meter dash in 32.5. Haiden Sands of OHS won in 30.8. Olivia Coomes placed fourth in the 100 meter hurdles in 20.4 seconds. Mallary Bailey of Catholic won in 16.5.
Sydney Weatherholt placed 12th in the shot put with a throw of 17–06. Ava Phillips of Breck County won at 29–04.
Catholic won the meet with 147 points. Hancock County was fifth with 63 points. Seven teams competed.
