Healthy Habits; Elecampane

Elecampane: Also referred to by the common name elfdock, elecampane (specifically the root) is a lung supportive and natural remedy for the common cold that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, most notably for treating respiratory and stomach challenges.

This plant is a perennial in the daisy (Asteraceae) family, and its tall-growing, bright yellow flowers are said to have grown where Helen of Troy’s tears fell when she was kidnapped – “Helen of the campaign” allegedly became elecampane. It is native to parts of Europe and western Asia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elecampane

Always do your research and/or check with your doc before trying elecampane or any other herbal remedies. If you’re positive it won’t have a negative contrast with a pharmaceutical medicine you take, you may want to try it in capsule, tincture, tea, dried root, powdered root or essential oil form.

Choose a brand like Star Botanicals or Frontier Co-Op that practices sustainable harvesting. Look for Non-GMO, Fair Trade and Organic certifications on the label or product description when purchasing herbs.

Here are some of the many possible health benefits of elecampane root: expectorant, antimicrobial (shown in studies have antimicrobial properties that fight staph infection), anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, protects the liver, anti-cancer, diuretic (helps flush out excess H2O & salt), promotes optimal digestion, natural pain reliever, soothes sore throat, and helps treat: rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, chest congestion, sinus infection and cough.

Be Well and God Bless You.
