Lady Hornets dominate in 16-1 win over Meade

It was a festival of hits and runs scored when the Lady Hornets defeated McLean County 16-1 in three innings at Vastwood Park Monday. Gracie Gaynor pitched a no-hitter and the victory was Hancock County’s 20th of the season on Senior Night!

The Lady Cougars actually led for a minute when they plated a run in the top of the first inning.

Seniors Halle Coomes and Adi Hurst got the party started when they both scored in the home half of the first. Baylee Estes later smacked a 3-RBI double and Layni Roberts followed with an RBI double. When the dust settled Hancock County led 8-1.

The Lady Hornets did it again in the third when eight more runs crossed home plate. The frame was highlighted with hits by Coomes, Taylor Gibson, Roberts and Ava Riggs. The game ended via the 15-run rule when Riggs doubled in the final two runs.

Gaynor earned the win on the mound. She allowed one unearned run on no hits, with three Ks and three walks over three innings.

Roberts was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI. Riggs and Estes were both 1 for 1 with a double and two RBI each, Gibson was 1 for 1 with two RBI, Coomes was 1 for 2 with an RBI and three runs scored, Hurst was 1 for 2 with two RBI, Lily Roberts was 1 for 2 with one RBI, Emmalynn Higdon and Brooke Toler scored two runs each and Kylie Westerfield and Gaynor scored one run each.

Lyon County

Ella Staples hit a 3-run home run and Lily Roberts pitched another shutout during a 5-0 win for the Lady Hornets over Lyon County Saturday. The game was part of the Owensboro Catholic Classic.

Roberts had eight strike outs through five innings and neither team had scored.

Emmalynn Higdon began a 2-out rally in the bottom of the fifth with a base hit and Baylee Estes followed with a single. Kylie Westerfield reached base on an error and Higdon was able to score, giving Hancock County a 1-0 lead.

Staples came to the plate and cleared the bases with a powerful homer that made the score 4-0. The girls added another run in the inning before Lyon County went down in the sixth to end the game.

Roberts got the win, allowing no runs on four hits, with nine Ks and two walks over six innings.

Staples was 2 for 3 at the plate with a double, homer and three RBI. Estes and Higdon were both 1 for 2 with a run scored and Roberts was 1 for 2. Ella House was 1 for 3. Westerfield and Gracie Gaynor each scored a run.


The Lady Hornets lost 8-0 to Madisonville-North Hopkins during the Owensboro Catholic tournament Saturday.

The Lady Maroons scored a run in the first inning, two in the third, one in the fifth and four in the sixth. Hancock County had girls in scoring position in the fourth and sixth frames but runners were left stranded on base.

Roberts took the loss on the mound. She allowed eight runs (four earned) on 10 hits, with two Ks and two walks over six innings.

Higdon was 1 for 2 at the plate and Westerfield was 1 for 3.

McCracken County

McCracken County plated 12 runs in the third inning during a 17-2 win in four innings over Hancock County Friday at Owensboro.

The Lady Hornets led 2-0 early when Westerfield and Staples both scored in the first inning. The Lady Mustangs answered with two runs in the home half before pulling away in the third.

Roberts took the loss, allowing 12 runs (11 earned) on 10 hits, with four Ks and four walks during 2.1 innings pitched. Gaynor allowed five runs (three earned) on three hits, with two walks in 1.1 innings.

Staples was 1 for 1 with one RBI, Higdon was 1 for 1, and Roberts was 1 for 2. Layni Roberts had one RBI, and Westerfield and Ava Riggs each scored a run.
