The speed limit on the U.S. 60 Wendell Ford Expressway in Owensboro was lowered to 55 mph beginning Wednesday, June 22, as state officials respond to higher traffic counts and a rise in crashes along the corridor.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced the change in late June, citing safety concerns on the roadway, which now carries more than 41,000 vehicles daily.
State data show crashes have increased significantly since the limit was raised from 55 mph to 65 mph in 2017 after the U.S. 60 extension opened. Officials said lower speed is intended to give drivers more time to react and improve traffic flow at interchanges. New signs are in place, and the updated speed limit is now in effect.
Drivers are encouraged to use caution, especially with increased travel expected around Independence Day. Motorists traveling between Hancock County and Owensboro for holiday events should allow extra time and remain alert along the roadway.
