James Johnson

James Ernest Johnson, 70, of Lewisport, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Hardinsburg Nursing Home.   He was born on July 29, 1953 in Moorman, Kentucky to the late Theron and Agnes (Rhodes) Johnson.  Ernie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.  To friends and neighbors as well as his community, he always lent a helping hand.  He always helped any person in need.  He was an outside person, always keeping busy mowing, working on cars and just loved being outdoors.

He was an active and faithful member of Union Baptist Church and a Deacon.  He loved the Lord and loved reading God’s Word up until his mind would no longer let him remember how to read.  We know that he is with our Lord and Savior in heaven.  We know now that his body and mind are whole again.

Ernie worked at Commonwealth Aluminum for 43 years before retiring.  He was Vice President of SOAR (Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees).  He owned and operated Hancock Video and Tanning for five years and loved all the people who came in.  He was also part owner of SO&J Electric of Lewisport.  He was a devoted member of USW Local 9443.  Ernie was preceded in death by his first-born son, James Ernest Johnson, Jr., his brother Johnnie Johnson and sister Geraldine Browning.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sandra (Newman) Johnson; children, Amy Johnson (Richard Smithhart), Brittany Nugent (Bryce) and Chad Johnson; grandchildren, Brianna Widdifield (Clay), Chris Blandford, Zacchary Jones, Abbigail Jones and Isaac Jones; great grandchildren, Zoey Widdifield, Clay Widdifield, Everleigh Jones, Lynzie Kaye Campbell and baby boy Jones coming soon; sisters, Linda Gilliam and Norma Richard along with nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 1 pm on Friday, January 26, 2024 at Union Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery.  Ernie’s family will be greeting friends on Thursday from 4 pm until 7 pm at Gibson & Son Funeral Home, Lewisport Chapel and on Friday from 11 am until service time at the church.
