Hornets take comeback win over TC 47-39

Dylan Morris drives toward the basket for Hancock County during a recent game. The junior led the Hornets with 18 points in the win against Tell City Thursday.

Hancock County earned a 47-39 come-from-behind win over Tell City during a varsity basketball game played at HCHS last Thursday. It was the sixth victory of the season for the young Hornets. Dylan Morris hit 7 of 8 free throw attempts down the stretch to help seal the win for HCHS. “We came out strong and executed well on offense and defense,” HCHS coach Josh Roberts said.

“We went flat in the third, but I got a timeout and really emphasized weathering the storm and handling adversity. The boys responded to the challenge with composure and strong defense. Tell City is a well
coached team and they play extremely hard.”

Alex Madden scored four first quarter points and Jacob Shultz hit a “3” to help pace the Hornets to a 9-4 lead at the first break.

Morris scored twice in the second and Keegan Wilson splashed a “3” and the halftime score was 18-15 in favor of the home team.

Tell City mounted a third quarter comeback behind the 3-point shooting of Byron Meserve. The junior hit three times from beyond the arc while Hancock got a conventional 3-point play from Morris. When the horn sounded the Marksmen led 30-25.

The Hornet offense took control in the fourth when five players reached the scoring column. Madden and Jordan Payne scored twice each while Camden Lucas and Dec Lewko also scored for the Hornets.

Meserve hit another “3” for the Marksmen, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with Morris. The junior guard connected from the field then was nearly perfect from the charity stripe over the closing minutes. Hancock County shot 37% from the field. They were 2 of 13 from beyond the arc and 13 of 17 from the line.

Tell City’s shooting stats were not available. The Marksmen were 8 of 10 from the foul line. “We didn’t take bad shots when we got down,” the coach said. “We are really happy with our improved execution in our
half court sets. Dylan showed strong play making abilities in the fourth and Alex was a force inside.”

Morris finished with 18 points to go with four assists and five steals. Madden recorded a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds, Payne had four points, three boards, two steals and three
blocks, Lucas had four points and three steals, Wilson and Shultz scored three points each, and

Lewko had two points.

Meserve finished with 20 points to lead Tell City.
