Hornets sting Knights, fall to Rock Creek

The varsity Hornets utilized a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Owensboro Knights 63-47 during Southwire Holiday Tournament action on Saturday at the Sportscenter in Owensboro. The win avenged an earlier loss to the Knights when they won in overtime at HCHS on Dec. 8.

“We played a balanced game and our defense continues to be solid,” HCHS coach Josh Roberts said.

Dec Lewko came off the Hornet bench and sparked the team with three made baskets in the first quarter Saturday. Keegan Wilson and Abe Simpson both knocked down 3-point shots while Jacob Shultz and Alex Madden also scored for Hancock during a 16-10 run.

Cooper Jones entered the game for the Hornets and hit two shots, the second of which was from beyond the arc. Madden scored twice in the frame while Wilson, Simpson and Camden Lucas were all perfect from the foul line as Hancock County increased the lead to 33-24 at halftime.

The Hornet offense was impressive in the third. Lucas converted a conventional 3-point play and scored seven points in the period. Wilson and Shultz both splashed 3’s and the team went 11 of 11 from the charity stripe. The result was a 54- 38 advantage for Hancock County. Shultz helped seal the win with three fourth quarter baskets and the Hornets earned their fifth win of the season.

Shultz finished with 13 points to go with one rebound and two assists. Wilson had 12 points, two boards and four steals, Madden had 11 points and 14 rebounds for another double-double. He added five assists and four steals for a great all-around game.

Lucas had nine points, one board, three assists and four steals, Lewko had eight points, six boards and one block, Simpson had five points, four boards, one assist and one steal, and Jones had five points and one rebound. Jordan Payne had three rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Carpenter Ekbundit led the Knights with 16 points.

Rock Creek Academy

Rock Creek Academy (Indiana) pulled away in the second quarter then held on for a 39-28 win over the Hornets during the Southwire holiday tourney Friday in Owensboro.

“Our defense was there, but we just had trouble scoring. With the injuries we’re having others step into new roles,” coach Roberts said.

Alex Madden scored twice in the first, but the Lions won the frame 9-6.

The Hornets continued to struggle from the field while Rock Creek hit two 3’s and won the frame 13-5.

Trailing 22-11 to begin the third period, Hancock County tried to battle back with long range shots made by juniors Dylan Morris and Dec Lewko. Lewko popped in another “3” in the fourth and later
scored on breakaway baskets before time expired.

Lewko led with 10 points, with three rebounds and one steal. Madden had seven points, six boards, one assist and one steal, Morris had five points, two boards and one assist, Jacob Shultz had two points and three boards, Jordan Payne had two points, three boards and a block, and Camden Lucas had two points. Keegan Wilson had one board, one assist and two steals, and Abe Simpson had two rebounds and one assist.
