The HCMS Lady Hornets 8th grade basketball team utilized a 10-0 third quarter run to pull away for a 35-10 win over Cloverport here Monday.
Ansley Chappell was off to a hot start, scoring five first quarter points to lead Hancock County to a 5-4 advantage. Jaylee Johnson and Chappell connected on two field goals each in the second and Raylee Johnson and Ryleigh French scored two points apiece and the Lady Hornets led 17-10 at halftime.
Defense was key for Hancock in the second half as the Lady Hornets won the final two quarter 18-0. Ellen Meserve scored eight second half points and Lani Keller scored six to lead the way. Chappell finished with 11 points to lead HCMS. Meserve scored eight, Keller had six, Jaylee Johnson and Raylee Johnson had four each and French scored two. Campbell Moore led Cloverport with eight points. Kiley Tindle scored two.
Breckinridge County took the lead in the first quarter and went on to defeat the Lady Hornets by a final of 40-17 on Nov. 21 at Harned. Greenwell led Breck in the first frame with nine points and the home team pushed the lead to 24-8 at halftime.
Hancock County won the third frame 4-2 when Jaylee Johnson and Zoey Wills both scored. The Lady Tigers won the final period 14-5.
Jaylee Johnson led Hancock with six points. Chappell scored five, while Raylee Johnson, Rebekah Wills and Zoey Wills had two each. Greenwell finished with 14 points to lead Breck County.
The Breck County 7th grade team had their offense rolling as they defeated Hancock County 42-15 in the early game on Nov. 21. Ellen Meserve led HCMS with five points. Lani Keller scored four, Zoey Wills three and Ryleigh French
hit a free throw.
