Dec Lewko fired a 4-under par round of 68 to win the 2023 All “A” State golf tournament at Gibson Bay Golf Course in Richmond, KY Saturday. The Hancock County High School junior is the first Hornet County golfer to accomplish this feat. The HCHS team finished tied for fifth overall.
“I feel good. The work I’ve done throughout the season finally paid off,” the left-hander said. “It was just a matter of time before I put everything together and it happened here.”
Lewko said that his first round performance in the WHCC club championship the week prior was an indicator that he was primed and ready for the All “A”.
“I knew I had the ability to do it and I just let it fall into place,” he said.
Lewko made five birdies against just one bogey during his winning round. He shot 35 on the front nine and 33 on the back to win by two strokes over Jacob Ryan (70) of Monroe County in the individual battle.
Lewko’s putter was on fire during the round. “I made three 20 footers for birdie and never missed a putt inside 10 feet.”
“What Dec accomplished is absolutely astounding!” HCHS coach Dana Newby said.
Lewko said he’s hoping to have a good round at region and semi-state and to qualify for the big state tournament later this season.
Kentucky Country Day won the All “A” state team title with a total score of 311, winning by one stroke over St. Henry (312). Bethlehem was third at 316, St. Mary fourth at 320, followed by Hancock County and Lexington Christian Academy at 327. Sixteen teams competed.
Other scores for HCHS were Conner Napier (84), Kolby Keown (85), Jaxon Blake (90) and Jacob Shultz (95).
