Lewko ties record, Hornets win Border Cup matches

Dec Lewko putts for birdie during a round at WHCC. The junior tied a school record with a 32 during a match at Breck County Friday.

Dec Lewko tied a school record and the Hornet golf team won the Border Cup matches played against Breckinridge County. The event was held at Windward Heights Country Club on Aug. 15 and concluded at Breckinridge Community Center Golf Course on Aug. 18.

Lewko led Hancock County with a 39 at WHCC on Aug. 15. Jacob Shultz shot 40 and Jaxon Blake 41. Kolby Keown
shot 42 and Conner Napier 43. The Hornets led by 11 shots over the Tigers after round one.

The matches concluded Friday at Breck County and Lewko was on fire from the start. The junior birdied the first two holes then added another on fourth to reach 3-under par. Lewko later made bogey on the sixth but quickly rebounded with an eagle on the par 5 seventh. He parred the final two holes to finish in 4-under 32. The score ties the lowest nine hole match score by a Hornet golfer.

That record was first set by Barry Griffin then equaled by his brother, the late Terry Griffin. Years later Terry’s son
Nick Griffin shot 32 during a match. Next for HCHS was Napier with a 41. Keown and Shultz both fired 43’s and Blake finished in 49.

HCHS coach Dana Newby was impressed with Lewko and her team.

“Dec had a phenomenal round. During his round he hit seven fairways and eight greens in regulation. He had 14 putts. He was ready to compete and absolutely dominated on Friday. “On hole five, Conner missed the green and had a difficult pitch up the hill. I’ve said from the beginning, you just need to shake off the bad shots and focus on the next shot. That’s exactly what Conner did. He made a great shot and sank his par putt.

Senior Maysen Tuell played as an individual and shot rounds of 47 and 48. Mercer Rogers led Breck County with rounds of 39 and 40.
