Black Walnut Hull

Healthy Habits: Black Walnut Hull

I remember hearing about farmers placing rain barrels underneath black walnut trees in the pasture. The barrels gathered rain for the animals to drink and when the walnuts would drop from the trees into the water, there would also be the added nutrition and anti-parasitic/de-worming properties from the green hulls soaking in the water.

Fresh, green black walnut hulls can be pulverized into a powder and easily used in powder form to make teas and poultices for internal and external use. The tincture is my personal preference, and I recommend Gaia Herbs Brand “Wormwood Black Walnut Supreme” tincture. This is an herbal compound tincture and contains, in addition to black walnut: coptis root, gentian root, clove, ginger and wormwood.

Always do your research and/or check with your health care professional before trying any new herbs to make sure there aren’t counter-indications, such as with pharmaceutical medications you’re taking. Also, don’t take black walnut hull for an extended period of time, and follow the dosage recommendation on the bottle, according to your weight.

Here are some of the many health benefits of taking black walnut hull:

  • eliminates parasites & worms
  • boosts immune system
  • supports heart health
  • promotes nervous system health
  • antiviral, antibacterial
  • anti-fungal
  • cures cold sores
  • heals athlete’s foot
  • anti-inflammatory
  • reduces cholesterol
  • promotes the healing process
  • improves metabolism
  • treats acne
  • reduces oxidative stress/antioxidant
  • helps with weight loss
  • relieves sore throat
  • provides natural energy
  • anticancer
  • antiseptic
  • can help remove warts
  • improves bone & teeth health

Black walnut hull is mineral-rich and provides calcium, beta-carotene, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, silicon, zinc, starch, protein, carbohydrate, fiber, B vitamins and Vitamin C.

The tincture or the powder can be added to a shallow bath of warm water for a foot soak to heal athlete’s foot. The powder or the tincture can also be added to a small amount of warm water and used as a healing gargle for sore throat. You can make a paste by adding a small amount of the powder to some filtered water, and this can be applied to alleviate skin conditions such as cold sores or acne.

Be Well and God Bless You.
