Dec Lewko led the Hornet golf team with a round of 79 during the All “A” Classic state tournament Saturday. The 1-day event was held at Gibson Bay Golf Course in Richmond, KY.
HCHS coach Danny Gray, who has taken over for the retired Dave Cowden, talked about the trip to Richmond.
“We went up the day before for a practice round and that helped the boys. Gibson Bay has several short par 4’s that have blind tee shots so it was good for them to get that practice in. They took notes on how to play the holes.”
Lewko led the way for Hancock County with a round of 79, which included three birdies. He got off to a rough start then battled back to shoot even par on his final nine holes. Much of the tournament was played during a rain storm.
“For eight holes it was miserable,” Gray said. “Dec did really good and I think the rain might have helped him slow down.”
Conner Napier shot 86, with one birdie, Mayson Tuell 89, with two birdies, and Max Gray and Kolby Keown both shot 91.
“That was a big round for Mayson. He’s starting to come on at the end of the season,” the coach said. “Max shot 77 in the practice round but couldn’t get it to carry over.”
McKean Collins of Lexington Christian was the individual medalist with a round of 70. Lexington Catholic won the team title with a score of 296. Hancock County was ninth at 345.
Lexington Christian also won the girls state team title. Their score was 313.
Madison Glisson of Ballard Memorial won the girls’ individual state title with a score of 72.
