The Hancock County Farmers’ Market opens for the season May 8 at 7 a.m., organizer Charles Hagman said. The market is at the open-air building at the entrance to Vastwood Park, and sells fresh fruit and vegetables for locals to purchase.
Several local vendors plan to be there on Saturday. Austin Edge sells tomatoes at the market, and George Estes sells cabbage. Hagman said a few other vendors also plan to be there on opening day.
The local farmers’ Market started in Hancock County in the early 2000s. Prior to settling at its current location, the market operated at two different locations. On Tuesdays it set up in the parking lot of the old courthouse, and on Saturdays it was at the parking lot at Jumpin Jacks in Lewisport.
Several years ago the county constructed the open-air building for the market. The site also hosts other events throughout the year.
