Lewisport defends tax increase in public hearing

By Dave Taylor

During a public hearing last Thursday to discuss the city of Lewisport’s plan to increase its property tax revenues 4 percent, the city council heard from some citizens who questioned the need for the increase.

The city’s property tax rate will increase from 20 cents per $100 of assessed value to 20.4 cents, but due to an increase in the total number of properties and the combined value, the tax revenues to the city will increase 4 percent even though each individual’s rate only slightly changes.
