Waiting for Trump…

President Donald Trump hinted Tuesday that he’s leaning toward taking steps to save the ailing U.S. aluminum industry, which, according to Century Aluminum executives, would lead to restarting two potlines at the Hawesville smelter and the recalling of some 200 laid off employees.

During a White House meeting with a bipartisan group of senators and representatives, Trump reportedly said that he was considering “tariffs and/or quotas” as a response to findings by a Section 232 investigation by the U.S. Commerce Department, which looked into whether subsidized Chinese aluminum was hurting the U.S. industry.

Last month, Century CEO Mike Bless announced that if Trump puts tariffs in place the company would immediately begin bringing back 200 employees and restarting two of their three idled potlines.
