Lewisport school demolition set, salvaging underway

By Dave Taylor

This week marked the beginning of the end for the former Lewisport Elementary School, after a demolition bid was awarded and workers began salvaging and dismantling the Depression-era building.

The Hancock County Library Board is having the school razed in order to build a new Lewisport library branch in its place. The board bought the empty historic building for $88,454.33 in August, after it languished on the market for more than eight months and after it had sat largely unused since 2005, when it was auctioned as surplus property after the completion of its replacement, North Hancock Elementary.
